<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With our Summer Show in mind our speaker for April was Mrs. Joy
Everington who gave a very amusing and informative talk entitled "The
Pleasures and Perils of Showing and Judging". She studied for a General
Certificate in Horticultural at Kingston Mauward, then shadowed judges
for 2 years before going on the Judges List.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> When
Judging vegetables she is looking for size, shape, colour and
uniformity. She used carrots as an example, asking the audience to
decide the winning plate of carrots.. When showing flowers and plants,
all dead leaves, dead flowers and seed heads should be removed, and 70%
of the buds should be in flower. Roses need to be half to threequarters
open, if you can see the stamens they are open to far.
Again she demonstrated the point by showing examples. If entering jams
and preserves in a show they need to be in clean glass jars filled right
to the top.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Mrs Margaret Keogh thanked Mrs Everington for a most entertaining talk which created a lot of interest.</span></div>
<div>

of the month competition. There was a tie for first place this month
with Barbara Norton, Josie Rigler and Jan Ravensdale receiving equal
points..</span></div>

<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Our talk this month was entitled "Delightful Gardens Near and Far " given by Mr Mike Webber.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">His
slides showed gardens from as far away as New Zealand and America with
others from around England and many closer at home in Dorset. Starting
with January he worked his way through the year pointing out the
different aspects of each season - like the fact that one sees the shape
of the garden better in the winter, which is important as a garden
should have a well balanced composition. According to Mr Webber one
should never see all the garden at once, a good garden should always
give surprises and arouse your curiosity. The size of the borders is
important, too narrow a border is never going to look good. The ideal
size for
a border is eight feet deep ( although not many of us have gardens big
enough for that!!). Mass planting is always more effective and roses are
less likely to develop blackspot if they are grown in a mixed border.
He finished his very interesting talk and slide show with examples of
many garden features including knot gardens, arches, paths, topiary and
statues. </span></div>

<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Our speaker this month was James Foster-Pegg from the Gardens Group
who have Garden centres at Sherborne, Yeovil and Poundbury. His
talk entitled" Spring Colour and Interest in the Garden" was very
informative and entertaining. He came armed with lots of plants which
members were able to purchase at the end of the evening. These included
shrubs, bulbs, perennials and spring bedding plants. As he displayed
each plant he explained their growth pattern, the soil they were suited
to, where to place in the garden and how to prune them.</span></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">He
emphasised the need when buying shrubs to check their final growth
height and spread as there are many variations of the same species and
whilst one variety may suit the space available others may not. His
pruning tip was if a shrub flowers before "Mid Summer" prune after
flowering, if they flower after that day prune during the winter period.
Bulbs should be fed after the foliage has died down approximately six
weeks after flowering. He drew attention to the many different feeds
available and that some will only be effective for one week, whilst
others will last 4-5 weeks. Since this winter has been particularly wet a
lot of the nutrients in the soil will have washed away; this can be
corrected by adding a top surface dressing such as manure or well
rotted compost.</span></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The talk finished with a Questions and Answers session much enjoyed by members.</span></span></span></div>

For our first meeting in this celebratory year our speaker was Mike Halsall who gave a very interesting talk on "British Wild Orchids". Mike really became interested in wild flowers at the age of 10yrs when he started a pressed flower book which he has kept to this day. His interest in Orchids came from his father.<br /> </span></span></span><br />
<span style="color: white;"><span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">There are 54 species of Orchid in the British Isles, 250 in Europe and approximately 25,000 worldwide. Orchids have three petals and three sepals, produces tiny seed which has to land where there is a specific fungus to germinate. It can be 4-5 years before they flower and sometimes as long as 15 years.<br /> </span></span></span><br />
<span style="color: white;"><span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">With the help of slides Mike described many Orchids and their habitats - the pyramid Orchid is the easiest to find locally especially on Bindon Hill. The smallest Orchid is the Bog Orchid which is only 2 inches high. There are several rare Orchids but, according to Mike, you will never come across one by accident you need to know where to look. He finished his talk with a slide of his favourite Orchid - the Lady Slipper Orchid, which is a critically endangered species and is kept under an iron cage with a 24hour guard in Grassington, Yorkshire!!<br /> </span></span></span><br />

<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">The Society's Annual General Meeting was held on November
13th. New Members elected to the managing Committee were Tess Burt ,
Jenny Mitchell and Pauline Hill. Shirley Jones retired from the
Committee and was thanked by the Chairman, Mrs Keogh, for her excellent
work in putting together in recent years very good programmes of
speakers, including the new programme for 2014. The Treasurer reported
on a good financial outturn following a very good Summer Show organised
by Tess Burt, which was sponsored for the first time by local
businesses.</span></span></span></div>

<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Following
the AGM the Chairman introduced the speaker for the evening, Mr Ian
Willis, whose talk was entitled "The Secret at Series House",
which is were the speaker has lived for at least 30years. He has for
the past 11 years opened his garden under the National Garden Scheme.
The National Garden Scheme started 80 years ago to provide monetary help
for retired Nurses. Nowadays the McMillan Nurses Association receive
the largest Donation.</span></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"> </span></span></span></div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d;"><span style="color: white;"><span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Mr
Willis originally opened his garden to support the "Wimborne Gardens in
Bloom" activity, after articles in the local press and TV he was asked
to open the garden under the National Gardens Scheme. It looks a really
quirky garden full of objects he has collected over the years from House
Sales, Auctions and rescued from demolition sites. These objects either
stand alone or in many cases are sculptured by Mr Willis to make
interesting garden objects some planted and some stand alone. The garden
is in Wimborne and opens at the end of July and closes around the
first/second week of
September. <br /><span class="tab"><span class="tab">We all enjoyed his slides of the
garden and his dry sense of humour - an entertaining talk which
included an interesting history of some of the buildings in Wimborne .</span></span></span></span></span></div>

<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">To
get the best plants for showing, seeds should be planted at the
beginning of November into an open cold frame (not a heated greenhouse
as they will become leggy) where they will stay all winter. Cover them up
if it snows, they will survive for a long time under cover.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-size: small;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">Ben
explained how to
grow plants for showing and with the help of the slides showed some of
the varieties of sweet pea and displays that had been done for major
horticultural shows.</span></div>
<div>
<span style="font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;">For
normal purposes sweet peas are grown directly into the soil, but can
be grown in pots or grow bags providing they are fed weekly, but they
will not grow as tall.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Wednesday 12th June was the date of our evening outing to
Upton House and gardens. To say we had inclement weather was an
understatement, but several hardy members braved the elements and toured
the walled garden. The second half of the visit was a tour of the
house, given by two very interesting guides, who were volunteers from
the Friends of Upton House group, who related the history of the house
and the families who owned it - many of whom were struck by financial
disasters! We all enjoyed the visit and agreed it would be well worth
visiting again although in much better weather conditions!!</span></div>

<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">"Dahlias and
Chrysanthemums " were the subject of the talk and slide show given by Mr
Bryan Madders at our May meeting. According to him Chrysanthemums are
the most maligned flower grown at the moment. Originally from China,
they flower from late July onwards, depending on the variety. He
explained how to take and keep cuttings over the winter and when to
plant out. Taking out the tips a fortnight after planting, encourages
side
shoots and taking out the central flower bud encourages the other buds
to come out thus producing a larger flower head.</span></div>

on the other hand
are becoming more popular with 80% of gardeners growing them. They like
sunshine and moisture and will continue to flower till the first
frosts. His tip for successful winter storage was to make sure the tuber
was properly dried and then wrap in newspaper. With both
chrysanthemums and dahlias the darker the leaf the happier the plant. </span></div>

<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This month's speaker was David Boag, a
Wildlife Photographer who lives in Blandford. He has been interested in
Natural History since childhood and began his photography career 40years
ago. His first project was a study of the behavioural activities of the
Kingfisher, which resulted in the publication of a book. Since then he
has worked on many more projects and published many books and DVD's,
some of which were available for sale at the meeting. One of his
commissions was to photograph the wildlife of a Somerset Quarry which
he said turned out to be a fascinating project. This lead to him being
commissioned by Aggregate Industries to produce a photographic record of
some of their working Quarries - 87 in all - many in the USA. The
introduction of Digital Cameras has made the taking of good photographs
that much easier and less time consuming, with the result that there are
about 600 wildlife photographers at present, whereas, when David
started he was one of six!! Margaret Keogh thanked him for his very
informative talk and <span id="misspell-5">superb</span> photographs. </span></div>

<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The speaker for our first meeting of 2013 was Kirsten Light who gave a talk entitled " Flora and Fauna on the Lulworth Estate"</span></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Kirsten,
who is a Ranger on the Estate, started her talk by explaining the
structure of the team and its members who manage 12,000 acres of land
most of it being chalk download.This management of the land includes
controlled burning or swaling, and grazing by ponies (shortly to include
cattle) to keep the gorse growth under control. Other activities
involve surveying of plants, birds, moths and butterflies; giving guided
walks; arranging beach cleans and talking to students of all ages. 6000
students are given talks each year on a variety of subjects and
500,000 people visit the area each year.</span></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The talk was accompanied by
slides, and included slides of the various birds found on the Estate.
Kirsten finished her talk by giving general information on the feeding
and caring for wild birds found in the garden' which contributes to
their wellbeing particularly during the winter months. Kirsten was
thanked by those present for her lively talk and all agreed she had a
most interesting job.</span></div>

most of it being chalk download.This management of the land includes
controlled burning or swaling, and grazing by ponies (shortly to include
cattle) to keep the gorse growth under control. Other activities
involve surveying of plants, birds, moths and butterflies; giving guided
walks; arranging beach cleans and talking to students of all ages. 6000
students are given talks each year on a variety of subjects and
500,000 people visit the area each year.</span></div>

slides, and included slides of the various birds found on the Estate.
Kirsten finished her talk by giving general information on the feeding
and caring for wild birds found in the garden' which contributes to
their wellbeing particularly during the winter months. Kirsten was
thanked by those present for her lively talk and all agreed she had a
most interesting job.</span></div>

<span style="background-color: #38761d; color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Our talk in October ws entitled "Abbotsbury Subtropical
Gardens" and was presented by the head gardener Mr Stephen Griffith. His
talk with slides gave us an insight into the past,present and future of the
gardens. They were started in 1765, but their heyday was in the 1890's, after
which they had gradually been allowed to run down. Mr Griffith joined the
gardens in 1990 after the big storm which opened up the gardens by demolishing
trees. This allowed a rethink how the gardens could be improved and a 10 year
plan to revitalize the Gardens was established. The first thing was to build a
shelter belt of plants which filters out the wind and salt and then to replace
trees lost in the storm. It was felt that they needed to diversify to attract
more visitors, so events and concerts have been planned a shop and restaurant
provided.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div>
<span style="color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After all the wind and rain the evening for our June outing was
sunny and calm! Mr. & Mrs Wilfred Weld kindly invited members to
visit their lovely garden beside the river at Wool. After giving us a
guided tour which included details of the history of the site, the
wildlife and the plants, the evening finished with refreshments. It was
three years since the members last visited and it was interesting to see
how the gardens had developed in that time. We were very grateful to
both Mr & Mrs Weld for the opportunity to re-visit their home and
for their hospitality.</span></div>

<span id="role_document" style="font-family: Arial;"><span id="role_document" style="color: white; font-family: Arial;">"A quart in a pint pot" was the talk given at the May meeting by Peter
Pitman ably assisted by his wife Jill. They hold a National Collection of hybrid
and specie Penstemons, approximately 200 named varieties. The slideshow
started with a short history of Portland, where they live, and included
pictures of their garden throughout the year, and projects they have done or are
in the process of completing. Penstemons came originally from North America and
are extremely hardy. They should be cut right back in April but never
covered with a mulch. This was an entertaining talk from two people who
obviously enjoy gardening. Their garden is open under the National Gardens
Scheme.</span></span></div>

<span id="role_document" style="font-family: Arial;"><span id="role_document" style="color: white; font-family: Arial;">Mr. Terence Heard was the speaker at the April meeting. He gave us a most
interesting and entertaining talk entitled "Traditional Woodcrafts and
Coppicing". The hall was filled with a variety of products which he produces
from coppiced wood. These items included amongst others Tree Props used in Apple
orchards, pea sticks, thatchers bars and walking sticks. Since retirement Mr
Heard has been engaged full time in coppicing, working within hazel woods in
Dorset, where some of the woods have been neglected for many years.</span></span></div>
<span id="role_document" style="font-family: Arial;"><span id="role_document" style="color: white; font-family: Arial;">
</span></span><br />
<div>
<span id="role_document" style="font-family: Arial;"><span id="role_document" style="color: white; font-family: Arial;">Mr Heard had a large site model which he used to explain the
various stages of the coppicing and management of a wood. He also explained
the process of making charcoal which is on of the by products of this
management. Coppicing is done between October and the end of March
when there is no sap in the wood. Any english hardwood can be coppiced, it
encourages new growth and in the case of Hazel extends the tree's
life. </span></span></div>
<span id="role_document" style="font-family: Arial;"><span id="role_document" style="color: white; font-family: Arial;">
</span></span><br />
<div>
<span id="role_document" style="font-family: Arial;"><span id="role_document" style="color: white; font-family: Arial;">He then showed us a selection of his tools and explained their uses.
He finished his talk by making a Beson Broom which he gave to the Society for
the Raffle. The lucky winner was Mrs. Jenny Halsall. Several other members
bought Beson Brooms but contrary to belief, nobody flew home on one!!</span></span></div>

Instead the speaker, Chris Evans, answered questions from members regarding the types of plants, lining, compost and watering needed for hanging baskets, before giving a most interesting talk with slides entitled "The Light and Dark of Bournemouth".<br />
This was the title given to the garden that he, together with a team of staff and apprentices from Bournemouth Borough Council Parks Department, entered for the RHS flower show at Tatton Park2011, for which they won a Gold Medal and the National Flowerbed Competition. He used elements of the History of Bournemouth and the people associated with its history, as the basis of his design. The cost of this project was covered by sponsors and after the show the garden was re-assembled in the Lower Gardens in Bournemouth for the public to enjoy.<br />
<br />
This year the team are entering a garden at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show, which will need 50-55000 plants which they started growing last September. These all have to be ready on the Day!!<br />
<br />
This really was a most interesting talk and we all know a lot more about Bournemouth's history as well as the effort needed to enter these shows.<br />
<br />
Flower of the month competition was won by Josie Rigler with this Camellia.<br />

<span id="role_document" style="color: white; font-family: Arial;">Our talk this month was on "Growing Vegetables for showing", given by Mr.

judges are looking for are colour, condition and uniformity and to achieve this
it is necessary to grow enough of each type to give a wide choice to enable
the best to be selected for showing. He then explained how to grow
potatoes, carrots and many other vegetables to show standards and the best way
to display them. For instance, to achieve the best results, potatoes can be
grown in small black plastic bags using shredded peat and watered with
rainwater, thus reducing the lime content which is the main cause of
scabbing.</span></div>

<span id="role_document" style="font-family: Arial;">We finished 2011 with the annual Christmas Dinner at Finley's. Very many thanks to John and Sue Perry and Staff for providing a wonderful meal and for looking after us so well (We shall be back this year!!). The annual prize for the overall winner of the flower of the Month competition was presented to Mrs. Peggy Worboys.</span></div>

<div>
<span id="role_document" style="font-family: Arial;">The talk for the January meeting was given by Mr. Mark Ching and was entitled "Wicked Winters", not quite so appropriate this winter as last, when last December was the coldest on record! He started his talk with the year 1683/84, called the Great Winter, when the Thames was frozen for 10 weeks and the sea froze for 2 kilometres off shore. Before Tower Bridge was rebuilt the Thames flowed very slowly causing it regularly freeze over, so they were able to hold fairs on the ice.</span></div>

<span id="role_document" style="font-family: Arial;">The worst snow avalanche in the UK was in 1876 in Sussex at Lewes where eight people died.</span></div>
<div>
</div>
<div>
<span id="role_document" style="font-family: Arial;">He warned that although the winter has been mild so far there is still time for that to change. His Grandmother used to say "a January spring is not worth a Pin!!" It was a very informative and interesting talk although we all left the meeting feeling a little colder!!</span><br />

<div><br />
<div class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: white;">The November meeting was also the Annual General Meeting. The minutes of the last year's </span><st1:stockticker><span style="color: white;">AGM</span></st1:stockticker><span style="color: white;"> were read out and approved. Members expressed their thanks for the work of the committee over the last year and the existing Committee was re-elected<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: white;">After the </span><st1:stockticker><span style="color: white;">AGM</span></st1:stockticker><span style="color: white;"> the Chairman introduced the speaker - Mr. Chris Allen whose talk was entitled "Amazing Plants". He brought along a selection of Seed, Cones and Fossils which we were all able to handle. One of the fossilised Fir cones was 3.5 million years old. Records of fossilised remains show that plants have been around for millions and millions of years, gradually evolving. The oldest living structures today are a small group of pines found in the White Mountains of Nevada which are 5000 years old.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: white;">Seeds come in various shapes and sizes and the speaker gave examples of how many there can be in a gram, in the case of Orchids ,there are one million seeds per gram. Seeds can remain dormant for many many years - in </span><st1:country-region><st1:place><span style="color: white;">Japan</span></st1:place></st1:country-region><span style="color: white;"> archeologists found Magnolia seeds which were 2000 years old and they were successfully germinated. The structure of every grain of pollen is identifiable and unique to its species.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: white;">Mr. Allen's interesting talk was very informative - for instance did we know that the Giant Redwood has fire-proof bark? that there is an Australian coconut the size of a pea or that it is smoke, not heat, which triggers certain seeds to germinate. He left us with this question which he has never had answered - How do Sunflowers move to follow the sun and when do the heads move back from West to East!!<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal"><span style="color: white;">Flower of the Month competition - was won by Mrs. Shirley Jones.<o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />
