The talk at the May meeting was given by Roger Grier and entitled "Cultivated Orchids". There are 23000 species of orchids world wide, and he started his slide show with examples of how orchids grow in the wild, with their roots wrapped around tree trunks or branches to secure them. Their only nourishment comes from sunlight, the air, and rainwater. Mr. Grier then showed some of the wonderful cultivated varieties available and outlined how it is possible to find bargains in supermarkets etc. He then explained the different types of compost and fertilizers available and ways of dealing with infestations such as Red Spider Mite. Most problems that owners usually experience are caused by using the wrong compost and overwatering. Bark, Broken Palm Nuts, Coconut husks, broken clay pot pieces and his favourite - stone chippings - are all good growing material. There is normally no need for fertilizers. Mr. Grier then talked the meeting through the problems members were having with their own Orchids which they had brought with them. This was a really practical, hands on talk and took a lot of the mystery out of Orchid growing.
Flower of the Month Competition was won by Mrs. Pat Inglis.
