Our talk this month was on "Growing Vegetables for showing", given by Mr.
Bob Symes. He explained that when showing vegetables, the important things the
judges are looking for are colour, condition and uniformity and to achieve this
it is necessary to grow enough of each type to give a wide choice to enable
the best to be selected for showing. He then explained how to grow
potatoes, carrots and many other vegetables to show standards and the best way
to display them. For instance, to achieve the best results, potatoes can be
grown in small black plastic bags using shredded peat and watered with
rainwater, thus reducing the lime content which is the main cause of
scabbing.
He finished his talk with some amusing tales as to how show competitors try
to fool the judges and win the competition!!
