March Report

We had a change of subject for the talk this month, as the speaker's plants which he needed to demonstrate the planting of hanging baskets had not arrived. Instead the speaker, Chris Evans, answered questions from members regarding the types of plants, lining, compost and watering needed for hanging baskets, before giving a most interesting talk with slides entitled "The Light and Dark of Bournemouth".
This was the title given to the garden that he, together with a team of staff and apprentices from Bournemouth Borough Council Parks Department, entered for the RHS flower show at Tatton Park2011, for which they won a Gold Medal and the National Flowerbed Competition. He used elements of the History of Bournemouth and the people associated with its history, as the basis of his design. The cost of this project was covered by sponsors and after the show the garden was re-assembled in the Lower Gardens in Bournemouth for the public to enjoy.

This year the team are entering a garden at the RHS Hampton Court Flower Show, which will need 50-55000 plants which they started growing last September. These all have to be ready on the Day!!

This really was a most interesting talk and we all know a lot more about Bournemouth's history as well as the effort needed to enter these shows.

Flower of the month competition was won by Josie Rigler with this Camellia.

Future dates:- Coffee Morning and Plant Sale - Tuesday 22nd May 10am - 12 mid-day in the Village Hall.
