Our talk in October ws entitled "Abbotsbury Subtropical
Gardens" and was presented by the head gardener Mr Stephen Griffith. His
talk with slides gave us an insight into the past, present and future of the
gardens. They were started in 1765, but their heyday was in the 1890's, after
which they had gradually been allowed to run down. Mr Griffith joined the
gardens in 1990 after the big storm which opened up the gardens by demolishing
trees. This allowed a rethink how the gardens could be improved and a 10 year
plan to revitalize the Gardens was established. The first thing was to build a
shelter belt of plants which filters out the wind and salt and then to replace
trees lost in the storm. It was felt that they needed to diversify to attract
more visitors, so events and concerts have been planned a shop and restaurant
provided.
Plants from all over the world can be, and are, grown in the
gardens because of the unique nature of the site. In 2006 a Jurassic Swamp
Garden was created. This year they won the Historic Houses Association's award
as "Garden of the Year". It was amost enjoyable and informative talk,
very well presented.
