November Report

The speaker for our first meeting of 2013 was Kirsten Light who gave a talk entitled " Flora and Fauna on the Lulworth Estate"

Kirsten, who is a Ranger on the Estate, started her talk by explaining the structure of the team and its members who manage 12,000 acres of land most of it being chalk download. This management of the land includes controlled burning or swaling, and grazing by ponies (shortly to include cattle) to keep the gorse growth under control. Other activities involve surveying of plants, birds, moths and butterflies; giving guided walks; arranging beach cleans and talking to students of all ages. 6000 students are given talks each year on a variety of subjects and 500,000  people visit the area each year.

The talk was accompanied by slides, and included slides of the various birds found on the Estate. Kirsten finished her talk by giving general information on the feeding and caring for wild birds found in the garden' which contributes to their wellbeing particularly during the winter months.
