October Meeting

We had a full house, for our October meeting, to listen to Ben Bulstrode who gave a talk with slides on Sweet Peas - Best time to Sow.

The National Sweet Pea Society, of which Mr Bulstrode is a member,  was started in 1900.  Sweet Peas were the Queen Mother's favourite flower and are often known as "the Queen of Annuals".

To get the best plants for showing, seeds should be planted at the beginning of November into an open cold frame (not a heated greenhouse as they will become leggy) where they will stay all winter. Cover them up if it snows, they will survive for a long time under cover.

Ben explained how to grow plants for showing and with the help of the slides showed some of the varieties of sweet pea and displays that had been done for major horticultural shows.
For normal purposes sweet peas are  grown directly into the soil, but can be grown in pots or grow bags providing they are fed weekly, but they will not grow as tall.

Mrs Keogh thanked him for giving us such an interesting and informative talk.

Flower of the month competition was one by Mrs Josie Rigler with this yellow gladioli.

Date of next meeting - Wednesday 13th November @ 7.30pm - speaker Mr Ian Willis - The Secret Garden of Series House.

Future Dates - Wednesday 11th December @ 7.30pm - Christmas Party at Finleys. Tickets £13 for Members and £15 non Members - from John Watts.
