The speaker for our first meeting of 2013 was Kirsten Light who gave a talk entitled " Flora and Fauna on the Lulworth Estate"
Kirsten,
who is a Ranger on the Estate, started her talk by explaining the
structure of the team and its members who manage 12,000 acres of land
most of it being chalk download.This management of the land includes
controlled burning or swaling, and grazing by ponies (shortly to include
cattle) to keep the gorse growth under control. Other activities
involve surveying of plants, birds, moths and butterflies; giving guided
walks; arranging beach cleans and talking to students of all ages. 6000
students are given talks each year on a variety of subjects and
500,000 people visit the area each year.
The talk was accompanied by
slides, and included slides of the various birds found on the Estate.
Kirsten finished her talk by giving general information on the feeding
and caring for wild birds found in the garden' which contributes to
their wellbeing particularly during the winter months. Kirsten was
thanked by those present for her lively talk and all agreed she had a
most interesting job.
Flower of the month competition was won by Mrs. Shirley Jones with this camellia.
